Caliph is translated from the
Arabic Khalifa (خليفة
ẖalīfä) meaning "
successor", "
substitute", or "
lieutenant". It is used in the
Qur'an to establish
Adam's role as representative of
Allah on earth. Kalifa is also used to describe the belief that man's role, in his real nature, is as khalifa or viceroy to Allah.
[3] The word is also most commonly used for the Islamic leader of the
Ummah; starting with
Muhammad and his line of successors.
